i haven’t felt particularly inspired by visual art lately. not that there is a problem with visual art but when you are traveling and working like a crazyperson, the fun goes to the side and it’s hard to find the time to look at what you love. some people go to the spa to relax, others the beach. i go to the art gallery and drink in the colour and brilliance.
when chicago was my home base, it was easy. the moca (http://www.mcachicago.org/), the art institute of chicago (http://www.artic.edu/), any number of small galleries filled with incredible pieces to keep me sane, and all accessible by the cta subway. now that i’m living in la, it’s not as easy – everything involves driving and i haven’t found my 1974 jaguar xke series III in gold yet.
yes, i’m due for another trip to the getty (http://www.getty.edu/museum/), the last one was about two or three years ago and i was thrilled to find an exhibition of performance art that i remember hearing about when i was a teenager on late night radio. i spent my incarnation day of 2009 at bergamot station (www.bergamotstation.com) and actually canceled my dinner party so i could stay with the art as long as i wanted (the truth? i’m no extrovert). and i have been known to complain about the la moca (http://www.moca.org/index.php) but i see rothkos on the website and so i have to go. and yes, i’ll be back at bergamot station. again and again.
the upside to driving? my favourite place to practice is in the car. two weekends ago i was stuck in traffic coming back from vegas. i was on my way to a little gig and what else was there to do but sing my songs over and over? and yes, i’m aware that people can see me in my car. it only looks funny because they can’t hear me.
xo.
